About this deal
Spells for Forgetting is a fabulous read, especially if you're looking for something with autumnal vibes, a moody atmosphere befitting the Pacific North West (PNW), and a murder mystery taking place in a small, isolated town where everyone has their secrets. I really enjoyed Fable, so I was very excited to get this book on Netgalley. This is Adrienne Young's first adult book, but the core of the story is very YA, and the book seems confused about what it wants to be. Is it a mystery? Magical realism? It doesn't do either well, so I ended up disappointed. You may like this book if you enjoy atmospheric reads. The problem is that there's not much under the surface. An island full of secrets and mysteries. A murder years ago that still haunts the town with a love that could be deadly to all involved.

The atmosphere is great tho, i like the idea of the magical island where apple grows and trees changing color in a night and people still practice witchcraft and the island is oftenly rain and gloomy. I think it’s the only thing i love from the book despite all the disappointment i feel I'd been in love with August Salt since before I knew what the words meant. I don't know when it happened - the narrow space between seconds, when a spark like the birth of a hundred stars found a home in my blood. Since then, every day had been colored with the glittering light of it dragging me in its wake, pulling me beneath its surface. And I didn't care. If this was what it was like to drown, then for the rest of my life, I didn't want to take another sip of air.” We’d had no beginning, I realized. We just always were. When I thought about it like that, it was comforting. Like there was no waiting for an end, either.”For information on release, appearances, ARCs, giveaways, and exclusive content, sign up for the newsletter at https://adrienneyoungbooks.com/

You want two different things at the same time: you are so curious to find out how the mystery unfolds and you don’t want the book end. Emery might have stayed on Saoirse but her heart left the moment August did. Her life has been frozen in time for over a decade and August’s arrival stirs up all the unresolved feelings she could never let go of. Yet whilst Emery is conflicted about August’s return, the rest of the town isn’t. They want him gone before his presence causes any more harm. As the seasons change and strange happenings start to occur, the islanders are prepared to take matters into their own hands to make sure August Salt disappears once again – perhaps even for good. the love story was pitiful but also kinda magical? i dont mind the timeline cause romance wasnt the only focus of the story, but i wished Emery & August had teamed up sooner to uncover the murder. the beginning felt dragged, and i was annoyed at Emery for stringing her boyfriend along when she was still hung up on August. even though the prose was breathtaking, the book still felt very YA.

Because I'm somehow still connected to you. Like a part of me isn't there if you're not there. For years, I thought that would go away. It didn't.” I want to say this book is actually good. I thought the story was intriguing enough to let me finish the book. It’s definitely one of those books that gets better as it progresses but might bore you a bit for a while.
