About this deal

An electromagnet is formed because of the Lorentz force (or, electromagnetic force) which was discovered by the Dutch physicist Hendrik A. Lorentz in 1895. It says that if a wire is placed within a fixed magnetic field, a current that is passed through it will transform it into an electromagnet. This magnet will either be repelled or attracted, depending on the direction of the current that is passed through it - creating a force. Image 1: Diagram of the Lorentz Force in action. (Credit: YouTube) Coaxial speakers, on the other hand, use at least one additional speaker (usually a tweeter) to make up the difference and produce crisper & better-sounding higher frequencies.

Not all speakers use magnets. However, the most commonly known speaker - a moving-coil dynamic speaker, relies on a permanent magnet and an electromagnet to produce sound.Inside a speaker, the voice coil is connected to the cone and placed in front of a permanent magnet which is fixed in position. When current is passed through the coil of the the polarity direction of its magnetic field is rapidly changed. Make sure you have the correct sound source selected on your phone or computer. For example, make sure you are not connected to a Bluetooth headset or speakers.

Alnico was one of the first materials used to build permanent speaker magnets. Image 10: Collection of AlNiCo Magnets. (Credit: magneticholdcompany.com) This article was great! Why? It was concise, clear and informative. After reading it I am able to understand the components ( which often seem to have more than one way to be described). Reply

Begin the lesson by having students watch the Science Friday video, “How To Make A Junk Guitar.” Ask students to describe the materials used in the video to make a junk guitar. Why was it necessary to use a magnet? Tell students that they will explore a simple way to make a speaker with household materials. Take the copper wire and wind it into a coil, winding it around a number of times. The finished coil should but slightly smaller in diameter than the base of the cup. Remember to leave both ends of the copper wire easily accessible. Step 2 While some cheaper standard speakers may have a “whizzer” cone added, which is a small 2nd cone attached to the larger cone for improved treble, they’re still disappointing. I’ve yet to hear one that sounded very good.
