Snow White in New York
About this deal
I know this graphic novel is getting a lot of praise for the illustrations but, unfortunately, even this aspect of Snow White didn't impress me that much.

Phelan cleverly uses this urban setting to tell Snow White's story and explore class relationships. Snow's relationship with the "dwarfs" here is much more meaningful than the Disneyfied version. For an interesting comparison, see Manet’s Effect of Snow on Petit-Montrouge, 1870, oil on canvas, National Museum Cardiff. The gloomy ambience, enlivened by only a few touches of red, is indicative of the artist’s essentially realist proclivities. Brown, Milton W. Actually I came across this book while I was browsing something else, and the summary intrigued me. Snow White isn't a favorite fairy tale of mine (that honor goes to Beauty and the Beast), so to see it combined with a historical period I am extremely interested in??? HELL YEAH

The Snow White fairy tale receives a 1920s Art Deco treatment in this beautiful retelling by Fiona French. Now a beautiful socialite, Snow White falls foul of her celebrity-loving stepmother who the tabloids call 'the classiest dame in New York'. A modern version of the classic fairy tale. Snow White lives in New York and is a singer with seven jazzmen A sharply witty update of the traditional fairy story. Fiona French's stylish, twenties illustrations are full of subtle visual jokes, which will delight older readers.' ( Children's Books of the Year)
Robert Henri’s energetic but stark image of New York in the snow deviates from impressionist urban snow scenes of the period in several ways: it represents a common side street rather than a major avenue; there is nothing narrative, anecdotal, or prettified about the image; the straightforward, one-point perspective composition is devoid of trivial details; the exceptionally daring, textured brushwork resembles a preparatory study rather than a finished oil painting; and the somber palette creates a dark, oppressive atmosphere. In his Record Book, Henri described Snow in New York as, “N.Y. down E. on 55th St. from 6 Ave. Brown houses at 5 Ave. storm effect. snow. wagon to right.” This one is really hard to rate it because while I really enjoyed the graphic novel, I also think it needed more substance.
