About this deal
As if the idea had risen out of nowhere, and was bobbing even now between them like a balloon, red as the coat she wore. She could burst it with a word. If she did, he would do nothing to attempt to change her mind. Nothing at all. He swore this to himself on everything he kept holy, if anything still bore that description.

Louisa Guy was sent to Slough House after she lost a tail involved in gun smuggling. She is one of the most competent agents and appears in every book. She and Min Harper had a brief but intense affair which ended in tragic circumstances. In 2003, Heron published his first novel, Down Cemetery Road. It was the first volume in a four-book series about Zoë Boehm, an Oxford private detective. Information is a tart—information is anybody’s. It reveals as much about those who impart it as it teaches those who hear. Because information, ever the slut, swings both ways. False information—if you know it’s false—tells you half as much again as the real thing, because it tells you what the other feller thinks you don’t know, while real information, the copper-bottomed truth, is worth its weight in fairy-dust. When you have a source of real information, you ought to forsake all others and snuggle down with it for good. Even though it’ll never work out, because information, first, last and always, is a tart.

This novella does a great job of continuing the story line of the Slough House series with the workings of MI5 at Regent's Park by placing the focus on an agent who never had a shining career, just a day-to-day job. Fifty-six year old John Bachelor is assigned to keep tabs on agents who aren't working for the company any longer but who can't be allowed to just float around in the wind. Dieter Hess is an old spook who is dead in his home when Bachelor arrives for his weekly visit. Everything gets sanitized and cleaned up except for one little thing, that secret bank account Dieter had. That had slipped right by John so now he has to find out how much damage Dieter's secret might have caused. Hess often complained about the money that he was paid for his years of service and it seems that he had been finding a way to supplement his income. When a second, secret bank account of his is uncovered, it reveals the possibility that he may have been a double agent. If he was, then this happened on Bachelor’s watch and now his future is in doubt. When Diana Taverner threatens him from everything from a prison sentence, to cancelling his pension, and even Slough House doesn’t look like an option, Bachelor knows he has to clean up the mess that Taverner is clear that he has created. A video circulates on the internet where terrorists claim to behead a boy live. The “slow horses” take the investigation into their hands unofficially. The book gets fascinating as it shows the struggle of this dysfunctional team trying to execute the mission successfully.

Brexit is in full swing. And due to mysterious accidents, the Slough Houses ranks continue to thin. The seventh entry to the Slough House series is as thrilling and bleeding-edge relevant as ever. The Oxford Investigations is a collection of spine-chilling mysteries of murder cases that will leave you astonished. Herron’s ability to take readers into a meandering path, completely confusing them and then finally presenting the big reveal shines finest here.I made the choice of reading one book out of sequence because it was convenient. Mistake! Try to read the series as written Shirley Dander and Marcus Longridge are the odd couple, though they’re not even a couple. She was in comms at The Park before she laid out a co-worker, and also has addiction issues. He used to break down doors and carry a gun before his gambling problems compromised him. This is just the first story. There are four more stories, each with a unique twist and an excellent horror theme. A great story (along with other short stories) is about a couple who, by mistake, get into the wrong house and then go through a robbery attempt.
