While I enjoyed reading most of Toby Litt's stories, there are some high and low points to this collection so it didn't seem to rate a higher mark from me. He is irreverant and entertaining in several of his stories, and he manages to capture the inanity of our capitalist, consumption driven culture quite well. By now, the good doctor was old. His finances were falling apart. His memory and his life were fleeing him. The spark of creation was dimming. He built a machine to keep himself alive, to stretch his life over as many years as he could. He hired a maid, to take care of him when the machine could not. He handed his company to a board of Executors, to care for it while he withdrew to his secret workshop, and began again on preparing an heir.

The beetle-duke’s palace shatters. Emma erupts from the crater in a bolt of sakuga, eyes set on the throne, the Throne, the THRONE of the King adorned in scarlet. She sprints atop the water, a blur. Faster, faster, faster, arms pump, a razor of slurry-water. In the final battle against the Scarlet King, Isabel was able to tap into the power of creation which allowed her to be more than a match to the evil old god. She alongside the other six warriors, wielded the King's spears and was able to kill him and prevent the destruction of the universe. In the aftermath, she alongside All-Death rebuilt reality.

Emma carries an umbrella, though the blue-white sun is weak in the Martian morning. Isabel cleans the sand off the solar panels and wakes Opportunity up for one last time, to send the girl off.
